The Victoria HarbourCats baseball club has pulled the plug on the 2020 summer season amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The HarbourCats were set to commence their eighth season in the West Coast League this summer, but with BC health authorities restricting large gatherings for the foreseeable future, baseball fans will have to wait until 2021 to see the bats swinging at Royal Athletic Park.

The league is made up of teams throughout British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon and so far the Bend Elks, Kelowna Falcons, Bellingham Bells, Corvallis Knights and HarbourCats have all announced they will be cancelling the season and not participating in league play.

The WCL was slated to start June 5, but has postponed that marker into July.

Despite Victoria cancelling their season, the WCL says they are looking at all possibilities for their member teams who have yet to call it quits.

“The league’s other teams continue to pursue all their options, with the potential for attracting a great number of terrific collegiate-level players,” reads a statement in a press release from the WCL.

“To that end, we look forward to working together as a league, and also with local authorities and stakeholders, toward finding creative solutions for the many challenges our teams face.”

As for the HarbourCats, they will look ahead to the 2021 season; a season that is expecting to see the recently-announced Nanaimo expansion team join the fray. The name of the Nanaimo team is scheduled to be announced sometime this summer.

The Victoria HarbourCats are directing ticket holders to their website for information on exchanges.

“Thank you all for your continued support of HarbourCats baseball. We look forward to welcoming you back to Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park in 2021,” said the HarbourCats franchise.

This past season, the Victoria HarbourCats finished with a 21-6 record, while falling one win short of winning the league championship.
