Another major event on the Victoria calendar has thrown in the towel for 2020. The GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon, which is held annually each fall, has officially cancelled due to COVID-19.

The 2020 race, which was to be run on Oct. 11, would have been the 41st annual GoodLife Fitness Victoria marathon but will be foregone at the risk of spreading the virus.

“On May 6, the BC Government announced the next COVID-19 phases of opening up the economy and loosening restrictions. However, it was stated that the current mass gathering number of 50 will remain in effect for the foreseeable future until a vaccine is found,” reads a statement on the event’s website.

“With this in mind, the Victoria Marathon Society Board of Directors regrets that it has to cancel the 2020 GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon.”

In 2019, the iconic Island marathon saw over 8,000 participants across a plethora of events, including the full and half races, the 8k Turkey Trot Road Race and the Thrifty Foods Kids Run.

Along with its popularity among local athletes, the GoodLife Victoria Marathon draws runners from all over the globe because of its scenic West Coast views. Due to its international standard, the event serves as an economic linchpin in Victoria as well, driving tourism at a time after the summer months.
