The Victoria Foundation is inviting people to make someone else’s day a little brighter on Random Act of Kindness Day this coming Feb. 17.

Sandra Richardson, CEO of the Victoria Foundation, explains that “Random Act of Kindness Day is just a day that we set aside once a year to really focus on being kind to everyone around us. We should be doing this all the time, but it’s just one day that we really sort of focus on that.”

And this year, as with everything else, RAK Day, as it’s known, will look a little different because of the pandemic.

“We wanted a ‘COVID-friendly’ Random Act of Kindness Day this year,” says Richardson. “We’re not able to get out and do the usual things. So fortunately for us, Black Press has offered this wonderful partnership. It’s a colouring contest, for children 12 years of age and under.”

All those colourful messages of kindness will be distributed to seniors in care.

“Everybody needs a little brightness in their life,” says Janet Gairdner from Black Press Media. “So we thought ‘great, let’s donate some space in our paper.’ It’s going to be in our five papers next week.”

Those five papers are the Victoria News, Saanich News, Oak Bay News, Goldstream Gazette and the Peninsula News Review.

There’s also a prize for one lucky child who submits a colouring page will receive a prize. Bolen Books has donated a $50 gift certificate, and $100 from the Victoria Foundation will be donated to the registered charity of the child’s choice.

Random Act of Kindness Day is on Feb. 17.
