Emma and Seabata Makhakhe are hoping to buy a house in South Africa for themselves and Seabata’s mom after winning $500,000 in the Lotto Max.

The couple, who live in Victoria, bought their ticket at Thrifty Foods on Fairfield Road and learned of their win on Sunday.

“It said $500,000 and I stopped and thought ‘wait’,” Seabata said in a statement provided by the BC Lottery Corporation. “I had never been so confused with numbers and had to google [sic] what $500,000 actually looked like to make sure it corresponded. Once it hit me, I started screaming ‘we won!’”

The couple says they plan to put some money aside for their children’s education and that they’re looking forward to sharing the good news with Seabata’s mom.

“We have dreamed about our kids’ education and always wanted to buy Seabata’s mom a house in Lesotho along with a small place for us in Cape Town,” Emma said.
