The exterior of a Cook Street hardware store was left damaged after a dumpster fire broke out on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2022.

Victoria police are investigating a dumpster fire, believed to be arson, that damaged a downtown hardware store early Sunday morning.

VicPD officers were called to the 1700-block of Cook Street at around 4:45 a.m. to find a dumpster on fire next to Castle Building Centre.

Residents living in apartments above the store were forced to evacuate their homes as flames began to spread to the building.

“We were evacuated from our building just as a precaution, but there was no damage or injuries. The only damage was to the metal siding of Castle Hardware,” one resident told CHEK News.

According to VicPD, the Victoria Fire Department also attended and firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze.

“This is believed to be an arson and we are continuing our investigation,” a VicPD spokesperson said, pleading for anyone with information to call the detachment’s non-emergency line at 250-995-7654 ext 1.
