Ladysmith RCMP said the collision happened shortly before 11 p.m. Authorities said a pickup truck was trying to turn left off North Davis road to go northbound on the Island Highway when it collided with a scooter coming straight through in the opposite direction.
First responders arrived and an air ambulance landed on the highway and took the scooter’s rider, a man in his 60’s, to Victoria General. Police say he has critical injuries.
An RCMP reconstructionist arrived and investigated for some time. A single lane of traffic was able to get by in both directions but it was slow for four hours until the highway reopened around 3 p.m.
A surveillance camera at a nearby gas station happened to record the crash. Mounties will use it as part of their investigation.
