Girls and those who self-identify as a woman and are aged 19 or under can sign up and participate in the Vancouver Island Regional Library's STEAM Scratch Contest for Young Women.

Young women and girls on Vancouver Island are being encouraged to participate in a coding contest.

Girls and those who self-identify as a woman and are aged 19 or under can sign up and participate in the Vancouver Island Regional Library’s STEAM Scratch Contest for Young Women.

The contest requires participants to use Scratch — a code block building interface — in order to create an animation, story, or video game on anything that inspires them.

Dalia Levy, an information technician with VIRL and contest creator, said the whole idea is to inspire girls and get them interested in computer programing and coding.

“The fields of computer programming and coding are still largely dominated by men. This contest is all about letting young women explore their creativity and passions, and potentially hook into a new career path or lifelong interest,” Levy said in a release. “There are also some great prizes for some of the lucky coders.”

Prizes include a $50 gift card to Best Buy, library swag including a VIRL whale plushie, and a copy of Remarkable Minds: 17 More Pioneering Women in Science and Medicine.

The deadline to enter the contest is March 31 and VIRL is encouraging participants to submit multiple entries. Individuals or groups can submit their work to [email protected].
