Vancouver Island man remains missing after boat located on West Cracroft Island

Mounties say a Port McNeill man remains missing after the boat he was travelling in was discovered ashore.

On June 9, Alert Bay RCMP were notified that a boat had been discovered ashore on West Cracroft Island with no signs of its operator, according to a Port McNeill RCMP media release.

An investigation, the release notes, later determined that 71-year-old Gary Ritchie was last seen leaving the Port McNeill docks on June 7 in a 35-foot-long wooden boat that was towing a 12-foot aluminum skiff.

RCMP say the wooden boat was discoverd on the east side of West Cracroft Island while the aluminum skiff was located one mile east near the Sophia Islands.

Ritchie has not been located and RCMP presume he has fallen overboard.

The RCMP’s West Coast Marine Unit made a handful of patrols on June 10 but has not been able to locate Ritchie.

Port McNeill RCMP are asking anyone in the area of the Johnstone Strait to remain vigilant for Ritchie.
