Urban deer relocation project in Kootenays a success

CHEK

Sixty urban deer have been relocated in the Kootenays from urban to rural areas.

The pilot project is being closely watched by deer activists in Victoria as well as Oak Bay council to see if there is a possibility the same could be done on the south island.

The deer were caught in Kimberley, Cranbrook, Invermere and Elkford in an effort to save, rather than cull them.

Out of the 60 deer, 29 were fitted with tracking collars.

So far, none of the deer have returned to urban areas.
