Victoria Police says a man is in custody after barricading himself in a suite in a multi-unit residential building in downtown Victoria.

Victoria Police says that shortly after 12:00 p.m. Monday, officers attempted to take a man wanted on multiple outstanding warrants under both the Criminal Code and the Mental Health Act into custody Q Apartments in the 600-block of Douglas Street.

Officers spoke with the man, however, he barricaded himself within the suite and refused to communicate further with police.

Members of the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT) and crisis negotiators attended the scene and worked several hours to resolve the incident.

Around 8:30 p.m., officers made entry into the suite to take the man into custody.

Victoria Police says the man was taken to hospital for a mental health assessment. No one was physically injured in this incident.
