Two University of British Columbia students are dead after a vehicle hit them while they were walking on campus early Sunday.

University RCMP say the incident happened at around 1:45 a.m. when the driver of a vehicle travelling on North West Marine Drive veered off the road and struck two UBC students walking on the sidewalk.

The students, an 18-year-old male and an 18-year-old female, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

RCMP say the motorist, a 21-year-old Vancouver man, then hit a parked car before coming to a complete stop. He was arrested on scene, transported to hospital with minor injuries, then released. He is expected to appear in court at an undetermined date.

“This is a tragic incident that has impacted the whole university community. Our thoughts are with the families and friends during this difficult time,” Cpl. Ian Sim of University RCMP said in a press release.

Speed, alcohol, or drug impairment have not been ruled out as factors in the collision, say RCMP. They also say the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service is on scene conducting a full investigation.

North West Marine Drive, between Stadium Road and Agronomy Road, is expected to be closed for a few more hours while the investigation is underway.
