McKenzie Elementary School and Colquitz Middle School have been placed under a hold and secure due to a bear sighting.

The Greater Victoria School District says two schools have been placed under a hold and secure after a reported bear sighting in a Saanich neighbourhood.

At 2:30 p.m., the district issued an alert about a hold and secure at Colquitz Middle School and McKenzie Elementary School.

As of 4:16 p.m., both schools remained under a hold and secure.  Parents and guardians are being asked to pick up their students at the school. They can also confirm other arrangements with school staff.

Officials said school staff will remain at the site until all students leave.

In a hold and secure, exterior doors are locked while school activity goes on as normal inside.

The BC Conservation Officer Service says they have received a couple of calls about bears in Saanich, but are not responding to any incidents at this point. Saanich police say they have not received any calls but are aware of the hold and secures.
