Two people killed in head-on collision on Inland Island Highway

Two people have been killed in what police say was a horrific head-on crash on the Inland Island Highway south of Fanny Bay.

It happened around 6 p.m. on Thursday on Highway 19 north of Cooke Creek Road.

Police say a woman in her 80’s was driving southbound when she crossed the grass median and slammed into a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say two people were in the other vehicle. Both were taken to hospital, one later succumbed to their injuries.

Their identities have not been released.

North Island  Traffic Services has launched an investigation

Highway 19 was closed in both directions, one southbound lane has since reopened.
