Saanich police are investigating an incident at the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre that left two inmates injured Saturday evening.

Officers were called to the centre in the 4200-block of Wilkinson Road, where two inmates suffered non-life-threatening injuries, said Det. Sgt. Damian Kowalewich with Saanich Police.

The incident was inside the centre, which is commonly known as the Wilkinson Road jail.

Speaking with CHEK News, Kowalewich did not disclose what happened or how the two were injured. “No corrections officers were injured, just the two inmates,” he said.

He said a forensic investigation team was also on scene, and Saanich police officers worked in partnership with BC Corrections.

A criminal investigation is now underway.

BC Corrections operates 10 correctional centres throughout the province, including the Wilkinson Road jail. Together they house about 2,400 inmates.
