Central Saanich Fire crews responded to two fires in Centennial Park early Thursday that are being investigated as suspicious.

John Robertson, assistant fire chief, says just before 2 a.m., they received a call that a hedge was on fire but had been extinguished.

“Somebody was passing by on Wallace Drive and saw this hedge smouldering and called it in,” Robertson told CHEK News saying the caller noted it had been extinguished.

“[Crews] were just going to check that out to make sure it was mopped up properly, and they found some garbage cans on fire in Centennial Park.”

He says the two incidents happened within about a half hour of each other around 2 a.m. Since the fires happened around the same time he says it is suspicious and Central Saanich Police are investigating.

Robertson the fires were easily extinguished and the damage was to “some hedge material and some garbage cans and a bit of bark mulch.”

CHEK News has reached out to Central Saanich Police for information. This story will be updated if a response is received.
