Two motor vehicles were involved in an early-morning crash in Nanaimo, resulting in both drivers being sent to hospital, according to RCMP.

The collision occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Monday, December 6, 2021, in the northbound lanes of the Nanaimo Parkway.

Police, Emergency Health Services and the fire department responded to the crash and both drivers were taken to hospital with varying degrees of injuries.

Investigators believe that one of the drivers, who was driving a red Honda Civic, was heading southbound when she lost control of her vehicle and crossed over the grassy median onto the northbound lanes.

The Honda Civic then collided with a black Nissan, which was travelling in the northbound direction.

The woman driving the Honda Civic sustained serious life-threatening injuries while the Nissan driver sustained “significant injuries,” according to Nanaimo RCMP.

Both were transported by BC Paramedics to the Nanaimo hospital.

Nanaimo RCMP says that the two northbound lanes were closed for approximately 45 minutes while investigators examined the scene.

Investigators say that the Honda Civic will undergo a mechanical inspection as part of the investigation.

RCMP is also asking motorists who may have been in the area of the crash at around 7:30 a.m. to check to see if the collision was captured by their dash camera.

Anyone with information on this incident is being asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2021-45116.
