Fire crews from View Royal, Langford and Colwood attended a fire in the 300 block of Island Highway on May 8, 2023.

Two people were brought to hospital, and one cat has died with others unaccounted for following a fire in View Royal on Monday night.

In a release, View Royal’s fire chief Paul Hurst says crews were able to keep the fire contained to one unit of the building.

Initially, the call came in that there were “several” people trapped in the building, but upon arrival all occupants had escaped.

Two people were brought to hospital due to smoke inhalation.

Hurst says firefighters found a cat in the initial search and performed CPR for about 30 minutes, but the cat passed away. He says there are other animals unaccounted for.

Langford and Colwood fire crews also responded to the fire, with a total of 27 firefighters and four chiefs staffing three engines and a rescue truck.

B.C. Emergency Health Services and RCMP were on scene.

View Royal Emergency Support Services is supporting the four displaced residents.

Hurst says no firefighters were injured in the fire.

The cause is still under investigation.
