Two Victoria police officers were assaulted by an intoxicated clubgoer outside of a downtown venue while responding to reports of unruly behaviour, according to the department.

Officers were called to the 800-block of Yates Street around 1:20 a.m. Friday, April 7, after it was reported that the patron refused to leave the establishment, police said in a news release.

When the officers attempted to escort the person causing the disturbance outside, they were assaulted by the patron and another attacker. In the ensuing melee, one of the officers was disarmed.

Eventually police managed to arrest the two suspects, with the second attacker being identified as a patron who was also asked to leave the club earlier.

Investigators are recommending charges of assaulting a police officer and disarming a police officer.

Police say there were several witnesses present during the struggle and are appealing for anyone with information or video footage of the incident to contact the VicPD Report Desk at 250-995-7654 extension 1.
