Pilot error and operational factors resulted in a plane crash in Duncan last January, according to the Transportation Safety Board.

A flying instructor and a student were injured when a Cessna 172 aircraft struck trees and power lines then crashed into a field north of the Duncan Aerodrome on Jan. 19, 2017. Ten thousand people were left without power in the area.

The instructor from the Victoria Flying Club suffered serious injuries while the student suffered minor injuries. The plane was “substantially damaged”

In its report on the incident, the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) said the plane touched down about a third of the way down the runway and the pilot tried to take off again.

“The aircraft left the runway below a safe flying speed and, once out of ground effect, sank below runway elevation, resulting in its collision with several trees and power lines,” the report said.

The report also said the crew did not do any pre-flight calculations for a short-field landing prior to the flight.
