One person was taken to hospital after a semi-truck crashed on the Malahat early Friday morning.

According to BC Emergency Health Services, first responders were called to Trans-Canada Highway, about two kilometres south of Mill Bay Road, after receiving reports about a single-vehicle crash at around 3:10 a.m. Friday.

A spokesperson for BCEHS told CHEK News an e-mail that two ground ambulances responded to the scene and that paramedics cared for and transported one patient to hospital.

The patient’s condition was not disclosed.

Video footage from the scene circulating on social media shows a semi-truck on its side and debris scattered all over the highway.

The crash resulted in the Trans-Canada Highway between Shawnigan Lake Road and Shawnigan-Mill Bay Road being closed for several hours — causing significant backups — as crewed worked to clear the scene.
