The District of Tofino is seeking artists to help design two decorative crosswalks, one that celebrates the 2S/LGBTQIA+ community and one that represents reconciliation.

Both crosswalks are located in Tofino’s downtown corridor, and selected artists will receive an honorarium of $2,000 for their work.

The 2S/LGBTQIA+ decorative crosswalk will be located at the intersection of Campbell and First streets, between the post office and Driftwood Gifts.

Any local artist is welcome to apply to design the crosswalk, but the district encourages anyone who is part of the 2S/LGBTQIA+ community to apply.

“Applicants are encouraged to self-identify and highlight their connections to these communities,” reads the district’s application page.

Similarly, anyone is able to apply for the decorative reconciliation crosswalk, though members of local First Nations are encouraged to submit a proposal.

This crosswalk will be located at the intersection of Main Street and First Street, between the Department of Oceans and Fisheries building and the Tofino Co-Op Hardware Store.

The proposed designs must be family-friendly and there are some limits on the paint colours and technical feasibility of the design.

Design applications will be accepted until April 24, with a target installation date of late summer or early fall 2024.

The crosswalks will be set up permanently.

More details on the project can be found on the District of Tofino website.
