Three parks along Highway 4 on Vancouver Island are temporarily closed to the public to help reduce traffic in the area, according to B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.
The ministry says MacMillan Provincial Park (Cathedral Grove) and the day-use picnic areas of Cameron Lake and Beaufort in Little Qualicum Falls are closed until the highway, currently shuttered due to a wildfire, fully reopens.
“Signs will be posted about these closures,” reads a release Wednesday.
“Barrier fencing will be in place at MacMillan Provincial Park. Parking areas will be reserved for use by ministry staff only. Ministry staff will be on-site to guide traffic.”
The BC Wildfire Service says the Cameron Bluffs wildfire east of Port Alberni, first discovered on June 3, is now under control. That means it is not expected to spread due to suppression efforts, which on Monday included 54 personnel.

The stretch of Highway 4 closed on June 6, but it’s expected to reopen to single-lane alternating traffic this weekend before fully reopening mid-July.
“Once the highway has fully reopened, BC Parks looks forward to welcoming back visitors,” added the ministry.
The affected highway has been cleared of fallen trees and debris, and temporary safety measures, including a concrete barrier in the eastbound lane and protective mesh curtains, are being installed.
