After a four-year career at the Fairmont Empress, Winston is heading into his retirement.
The beloved dog started at the Empress in January 2019, and quickly gained local and international attention.
“People have been coming in off the street saying can we meet Winston?” Tracey Drake said in 2019, when she was the hotel’s public relations director. “Where’s Winston? How do we see Winston? So he’s certainly become our little star.”
Winston had initially started training to be a guide dog for blind people, but did not make the cut.
“Luckily for us, his only flaw was that he was too friendly,” Drake said in 2019. “He loves getting attention and also giving attention.”

Winston’s retirement was announced on the dog’s Instagram account.
“I will dearly miss greeting guests and bringing a sense of calm to the hotel,” the post says. “Thanks for all the belly rubs, treats, walks and love – I’ll never forget it!”
Comments quickly poured in wishing Winston the best on his retirement from the Empress, including a former canine visitor to the hotel.
“Awe, happy retirement Winston! ! I’ll forever cherish the wonderful memories that Scout & I made with you, during our visit to the @fairmontempress especially the adorable photos of you and Scout in your custom robes!! That was one of our most favorite trios! ❤️❤️❤️” Scoutgoldenretriever said on the post.
