A temporary alternate route has been set up north of Zeballos due to hazards related to recent wildfires in the area.

Zeballos Mainline Road/Maquinna Avenue, north of the Sugarloaf Bridge, will be closed to all traffic until further notice. Crews have started to remove significant rockfall and debris from the road and work is expected to continue throughout the winter.

Traffic will be diverted to the nearby Parkway Road and Zeballos Forest Service Road. Signs and closed gates will be in place on both ends of the closure to notify locals and visitors.

If there is an emergency or tsunami warning, the road will be reopened.

Zeballos is still under a local state of emergency that was first issued on Aug. 16, 2018 due to the nearby Gold Valley Main wildfire.

The town’s council will discuss letting wildfire evacuees return to their homes in Zeballos. An evacuation order was issued in September due to the threat of landslides. The evacuation order is in effect for all houses north of Sugarloaf Bridge, all houses on the east side of Maquinna Avenue North of Pandora Crescent, and all houses on Pandora Crescent that are east of Maquinna Avenues.

Houses on the east side of Ferris Road at the addresses 402-B, 404, and 406 are also included in the order.

The order came just weeks after a similar order prompted by the Gold Valley Main wildfire.
