TC10K run sees a record breaking turnout with over 8.5K participants

For the second year in a row, 24-year old Vancouver-resident Thomas Nobbs crossed the finish line in first place at this year’s Times Colonist 10K run.

He clocked in 30:06, just a little over a minute under his personal best of 29:43 from last year.

“A bit of a surprise, I think I knew coming out here, it’s gonna be a bit tougher than last year,” said Nobbs.

The surprise came in the form of gusty winds – a less-than-favourable condition not conducive to clocking in fast times during the race.

“It was a little windy but I kept the body temperature down,” says finisher Steve Eriksen.

Finishing first in the women’s elite division at 34:13 is Makenna Fitzgerald who slowly sat down after receiving her medal, exhausted, but happy to have come in 16th overall this year.

A total of 60 elite runners competed in this year’s race.

Mark deFrias, event producer tells CHEK, “we’re really excited this year, our 35th since the first ever TC10K, so it’s a big celebration today.”

“TC10K Run is a great community event, a very achievable race for people of all ages and all abilities; you can run or you can walk the race.”

Mariah Kelly, RunSport TC10K director of operations noted the sea of lime green, pink, and neon shirts this year that perfectly captured this year’s “back to the ’90s” theme.

The first Times Colonist 10K Run was held on April 29, 1990.

Organizers said they are happy with this year’s record breaking turnout. The highest since the COVID pandemic cancelled a race in 2020, and the virtual run edition in 2021. The race resumed to its usual in-person run in 2022.

“First year back was only 5,500 runners, last year was 7,500 runners, and this year the 35th Times Colonist 10K had 8,643 registrants for the race,” said deFrias.

They’re hoping to hit the 10,000 mark in the next edition of the TC10K run.

Full race results are posted here.
