Taylor Swift performs during the opener of her Eras tour Friday, March 17, 2023, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Quadra Island RCMP say a fan was duped into buying a fake concert ticket.

A Taylor Swift fan is shaking the feeling of being scammed after she was duped into buying a fake ticket to one of the popstar’s upcoming concerts, according to Quadra Island RCMP.

Mounties were alerted to the scam on Aug. 16, when the complainant recalled seeing her Facebook friend post a link to “some very discounted” Swift tickets.

RCMP say the complainant, a female, knew this friend personally and believed the link was real. So she tagged her cousin under the link because she’s a big fan of Swift.

“Soon after, the complainant was advised that her cousin had sent the money but still hadn’t received the ticket,” say RCMP in a news release Saturday.

Then it was revealed the friend’s Facebook account had been hacked, and some unknown person was behind the scam. The complainant later reimbursed her cousin for the missing money.

Swift, the pop singer known for her songs like “Shake It Off,” “Bad Blood” and “Anti-Hero,” announced on Aug. 3 she was bringing her Eras tour to Toronto.

Now RCMP are reminding the public to stay wary of online activity.

“The Quadra RCMP are reminding the public to protect their online accounts from fraud and data breaches by creating a strong password, enabling multi-factor authentication, and (not revealing) personal information over social media,” they say in the release.

They also advise people to be “very suspicious” of social media messages that seem odd, out of place or asking for money, even if the message appears to be from someone you know.

“And lastly, if it is too good to be true, it probably is,” added RCMP.

Fraud victims can report incidents to the Canadian Anti-Fraud at 1-888-495-8501.
