A 43-year-old man who allegedly stole two purses inside the Red Robin on Tolmie Avenue Sunday has been arrested and charged.

Saanich police said at around 2 p.m., the man entered the restaurant and grabbed two purses sitting on an empty chair next to a table of diners.

The suspect fled across Blanshard Street and dropped the purses while staff chased him, police said. Another witness got in his car and tracked the man down on Alder Street where he attempted to hide behind a fence. The witness was able to hold the man until police arrived to arrest him.

Saanich police said the man is well known to police and was wanted for previous thefts. On top of a warrant, he is facing two counts of theft, three counts of breaching his recognizance, four counts of failing to comply with his probation order and one count of obstruction. He was held in custody for court. Saanich police have not released his name.
