RCMP have arrested a suspect of a serious assault in Cumberland after he fled from the scene on an ATV.

In a release, Comox Valley RCMP say officers were called to the 3300 block of Third Street in Cumberland on July 5 around noon for a report of an assault with a weapon.

The victim of the assault sustained serious, potentially life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital. Police say the victim remains in hospital in stable condition.

Officers from five Comox Valley RCMP departments responded to the call, and one suspect was identified early on.

When officers found the suspect, he fled on an ATV into a rural wooded area, and two additional departments — police dogs and the air services — responded to help and located the suspect, who was arrested.

“Although the investigation is still ongoing, the evidence gathered thus far indicates that this was a targeted attack and there does not appear to be a risk to the general public,” said Const. Monika Terragni, Comox Valley RCMP Media Relations Officer.

The suspect is charged with multiple offences, which the RCMP do not detail, and he remains in custody.

Anyone with information on this assault is asked to contact the Comox Valley RCMP at (250) 338-1321.
