Police have arrested a 41-year-old man suspected of robbing a CIBC branch at the Port Place Shopping Centre, Nanaimo RCMP said Monday.

At around 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 5, police went to the bank after receiving a 911 hold-up alarm. Staff at the bank told police a man had entered the bank and produced a note indicating he had a gun. A teller handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and the suspect left the bank.

Police said no weapon was seen or produced and no employees were injured during the robbery.

Bank surveillance footage showed the suspect arriving and then leaving in a waiting taxi. Within two hours, officers tracked the suspect to a residence on Wesley Street. He was arrested without incident and police recovered most of the stolen money.

David Scott Mcaree, of no fixed address, has been remanded into custody and charged with one count of robbery. His next court appearance is set for Jan. 15 at Nanaimo Provincial Court.
