The Chemainus Secondary School closed Thursday morning following a structure fire inside the building.

Fire crews arrived on scene after receiving a report around 9:00 a.m. this morning. The cause of the fire and extent of damage are still to be determined as district staff are on site waiting for the damage assessment.

In a Facebook post made by Cowichan Valley School District earlier today it reads “all students and staff were quickly evacuated and everyone is safe and accounted.” Over 200 students were evacuated from the building during the incident.

The location of the fire within the school and how far it spread hasn’t be released to the public at this time.

The school has been officially closed for the day and arrangements are being made by the school to contact guardians and transport students home safely.

In an update from district officials they’ve announced that the school will also remain closed on Friday as they wait for the smoke in the building to clear. A full assessment of the damage will be revealed once fire crews give the okay for staff to enter the building.

The school is expecting to update students and parents with further information once they know more.

This is a developing story.
