Strong winds expected over Southern Gulf Islands Friday, special weather statement issued

Strongs winds are expected over parts of British Columbia.

Environment Canada said strong northwesterly winds are expected Friday over the Southern Gulf Islands.

According to the weather agency, a cold front over the B.C. north coast will move south Thursday night and cross the inner south coast early Friday morning.

Southerly winds of 30 to 60 kilometres an hour ahead of the cold front are expected to shift to west or northwest 40 to 60 km/h winds. Some gusts could reach 80 km/h over western sections of Metro Vancouver near the Strait of Georgia.

Winds are expected to ease by early Friday evening.
