Stretch of Highway 19a near Fanny Bay reopens after six weeks of construction

A stretch of the Old Island Highway between Fanny Bay and Deep Bay has re-opened slightly ahead of schedule after six weeks of construction work.

Mainroad North Island Contracting says work on replacing a culvert is complete and the section of Highway 19a reopened on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The road closure, from Cook Creek Bridge to 200m south of the Rosewall Creek Bridge, started on August 12 and had been expected to continue through today

At the time, the move at the height of tourism season sparked concern among business owners.

The transportation ministry said it recognized the impact of the road closure on local business and residents, but the work had to be done during the summer months.
