The Sticky Wicket Pub and Restaurant and all other venues at Victoria’s Strathcona hotel complex closed Thursday.
Management of the hotel says it was a consequence of structural concerns that came up during the hotel’s face-lift. All the hotel’s guests have been relocated.
They say the issue should be resolved in 24 hours and they are already booking guests for Friday after 4 p.m.
No details have been released on how many guests were moved or what the issue caused the evacuation.
Many were upset when they arrived to find the building closed.
“We visited 10-years ago, we were looking forward to visiting again and disappointed to see it closed,” said Matt Kilroy, visiting from Washington.
“We came back for nostalgic purposes,” said Robbie Aunspach also visiting from Washington state.
“We came back to Canada back in 2013 so had a lot of fun and enjoyed the time here just wanted to come back and just see the whole building so kinda bummed they are closed for now,” he added.
Some were confused by the hotel’s reason for the issue.
“I am not entirely sure I know what that means… for something to be compromised for 24 hours structurally? But hopefully, they can get it sorted out,” said Victoria resident Verlie Martin.
The Strathcona Complex, at the corner of Douglas and Courtney streets, includes a hotel, liquor store, clubhouse restaurant, pub and games room. The complex has been undergoing renovations.
Some holiday parties that were scheduled for Thursday have also been relocated, Terry Friensen, the outlets manager, said.
The Strathcona has been closed, and all hotel guests moved, after a structural issue during the facelift going on. They hope it will be solved within 24 hours. Are still booking guests for tomorrow after 4 pm @CHEK_News #yyj pic.twitter.com/TSPgtBidQR
