City of Nanaimo says unauthorized mountain bike trail building activity in Linley Valley Park is harmful to the environment.

The City of Nanaimo has a message for those building unauthorized bike trails in Linley Valley Park: stop doing it.

In a press release issued on Monday, the City of Nanaimo said it is aware of unauthorized mountain bike trail building activity that has been happening in Linley Valley Park lately.

The municipality says trail building in the park must “stop immediately” because its illegal and those doing it can be subjected to fines. The city is also reminding residents that “the building of trails on any parkland” is also not allowed.

Trails must be approved before they can be built because unauthorized trail construction can “negatively impact the environment” in numerous ways, according to the City of Nanaimo.

“It’s not ok to build unauthorized trails in any city park. Linley Valley Park is a natural green space in the heart of our city and is intended to be enjoyed and conserved as such. Anyone undertaking illegal trail building is asked to stop and will be subject to fines if caught. I’d ask anyone who spots this activity to please report it to bylaw services,” Al Britton, the city’s manager of park operations, said in a press release.

The city says it has been in contact with local mountain bike clubs, who have informed them that they have not been building any trails in the park. The city believes the illegal trail building is being undertaken by an “individual or a small group of people” unattached to established clubs.

Nanaimo has more than 170 kilometres of trails throughout the community, according to the release.
