West Shore RCMP responded to multiple reports of a vehicle driving the wrong way on Highway 1 on Sunday morning.

At 11:12 a.m. on April 26, officers found the vehicle in a construction site just off of the West Shore Parkway and arrested the driver.

The vehicle did not collide with any other vehicles in the area, but it was found high centred in the construction site.

Reports of this driver originally came from the Saanich Police jurisdiction as a stolen vehicle.

At approximately 9 a.m. Saanich Police received a report of a vehicle that was taken without the owner’s consent. This is the same vehicle to be later reported driving on the wrong side of the road.

The 42-year-old male driver was arrested for theft of auto and driving while prohibited.

The West Shore RCMP turned over the suspect to the Saanich Police for further followup and investigation.

The prohibited driver was held in custody and then later released to make an appearance in court later this year.

Although the original theft came out of Saanich, the West Shore RCMP have seen a 167% increase in vehicle theft amid the pandemic.
