Some pieces of sterile equipment had to be cleaned after a sewage leak in a reprocessing room at the Victoria General Hospital.

Island Health spokeswoman Meribeth Burton said at around 10:40 a.m. the sewage leak was discovered in a reprocessing room, which is where surgical equipment is cleaned after a surgery and prepared for another one.

The leak was caused by a block in a sewage pipe above the room and repairs were completed around 1:30 p.m. Cleanup continued throughout the afternoon.

Burton said no patients were affected as some sterile equipment was brought over from the Royal Jubilee Hospital to ensure procedures could go ahead as scheduled.
