A Stelly’s Secondary School student has been arrested after an investigation into a social media post showing them firing a weapon at a small target with the caption “practicing for school.”

Police said the male student was arrested on Monday without incident and was released on a promise to appear and undertaking with several conditions.

The Central Saanich Police Service (CSPS) are recommending charges including uttering threats and mischief.

“The CSPS thoroughly investigates all reports of threats to our schools and our community,” CSPS Youth Resource Officer Michelle Joyce said in a statement.

“We also encourage parents to speak with their children about appropriate use of social media.”

Police are still investigating when or where the video was made. The video was posted to Instagram and was seen by students who brought it to the attention of the school. The school then called the police.

The student will appear in court under the Youth Criminal Justice Act next month.

A previous version of this story stated the student was firing at a snowbank. The police issued a correction and said the student was firing at a small target. The article has been updated.
