The province says it is committing $1.9 million dollars for increased staffing levels at eight residential care homes in Nanaimo and Parksville.

It is part of $48 million dollars being allocated to B.C. health authorities in 2018-19 to fund more than a million hours of direct care, which will see $6.4 million towards seniors care on Vancouver Island.

The six facilities that will split funding for higher care home staff levels in Nanaimo include Eden Gardens, Kiwanis Village Lodge, Malaspina Gardens, Nanaimo Seniors Village, Wexford Creek and Woodgrove Manor.

Funding is also going to Arrowsmith Lodge and Stanford Seniors Village in Parksville.

Funding at the homes ranges from $139,000 to $409,000.

The province says it plans to reach 3.36 care hours per-resident-per-day by 2021 at a cost of $240 million, announced in September.

The government says the average daily direct-care hours was 3.11 per -resident in 2016.
