Downtown Victoria’s St. Patrick’s Day Festival has taken over Government Street between Broughton and Yates streets.

The day started with live music on the main stage featuring the BC Fiddle Orchestra.

“We always have a gig on St. Paddy’s Day just because of the nature of what we do – fiddle music and so much of our Canadian fiddle music is inspired by the Irish tradition,” said BC Fiddle Orchestra music director Daniel Lapp.

Sunday’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations were filled with family-friendly activities, from traditional Irish music and dance to market vendors, crafts and bouncy castles.

A day to celebrate the patron saint of Ireland is also an opportunity for some to drink with friends.

“(I’m) lucky to have a birthday on St. Paddy’s Day. It’s easy to get everyone out, that’s for sure,” said local resident Devin.

With the temperature soaring to a high of 18 C, patios have opened, offering cold beverages and live music, with festivities expected to continue well into the evening.
