A special weather statement from Environment Canada is calling for strong winds across parts of Vancouver Island Friday evening.

The weather agency said a deep low-pressure system will approach the central coast of B.C. Friday evening. Strong southeast winds are expected to spready to communities over the northern half of Vancouver Island and the central and north coasts. Strong southeast winds are also forecast for Haida Gwaii on Friday night.

Winds are then set to shift to the southwest early Saturday morning and begin to ease.

Moderate rain is also in the forecast but Environment Canada said strong winds are the primary concern. The weather agency also said there is some uncertainty with the exact track of the system and therefore the strength of the winds.

North Vancouver Island, west Vancouver Island and east Vancouver Island from Courtenay to Campbell River are all under the special weather statement.
