A special weather statement issued Saturday by Environment Canada has been replaced with a wind warning, forecasting winds of up to 80 km/h Sunday night for parts of the Island.

An intense front will reach the south coast tonight and bring strong winds and heavy rain. Winds will increase throughout today and reach 80 km/h tonight over exposed coastal areas for west, east and south Vancouver Island

A wind warning is also still in place for North Vancouver Island saying winds could reach a peak speed of 90 km/h gusting to 110 Sunday evening.

The weather statement warning of strong wind and heavy rain is still in place for Central Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands.

Winds are expected to ease Monday morning for most of the Island, and by Wednesday afternoon for the inner south coast.

An unstable onshore flow on Tuesday may also bring scattered thunderstorms for coastal B.C. with locally intense rainfall rates and amounts.

Environment Canada warns damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows and that loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage — or cause tree branches to break.
