Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for north Vancouver Island, west Vancouver Island inland Vancouver Island and east Vancouver Island, from Courtenay to Campbell River and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay, due to a pair of disturbances that are approaching the south coast of B.C.

Rain is expected to start midday Thursday and increase in intensity throughout the evening. Periods of rain are expected to continue through Friday before coming to an end early Saturday morning. A total of 30 to 50 millimetres is possible by Friday morning with additional amounts of 30 to 50 mm through Friday night.

Winds across Vancouver Island and the inner south B.C. coast will pick up through Thursday afternoon. Coastal areas should see winds of 40 to 60 kilometres an hour at times.

Environment Canada says given the much drier than normal conditions this summer, some drought-stressed trees could be more susceptible to wind damage at lower speeds.
