Special prosecutor appointed after 3 charged with mischief at John Horgan’s home

A special prosecutor will handle a case involving three protesters and B.C. Premier John Horgan.

The BC Prosecution Service announced on May 25 that Victoria lawyer Dirk Ryneveld was named special prosecutor in relation to allegations of mischief by three individuals at the home of John Horgan in February. The appointment was made by the Assistant Deputy Attorney General Peter Juk on March 5, but not announced until Monday.

Howard Gerard Breen, Regine Monika Klein, and Mark William Nykanen have now been charged with mischief following protests at John Horgan’s home on Feb. 18. They are scheduled to appear in provincial court in Colwood on July 15.

Special prosecutors are appointed in cases where there is the potential for real or perceived improper influence in the administration of justice.

In this case, the appointment was made due to the nature of the allegations and the involvement of the premier as a potential witness, according to the BCPS.
