A three-week-old baby survived a car crash in Nanaimo that resulted in multiple people being taken to hospital over the weekend.

Police said at around 3:30 p.m. on May 23, a 19-year-old man was driving a GMC Jimmy south along Jingle Pot Road, near Kilpatrick Road, when he lost control and crashed into a Dodge Dakota that was travelling northbound, according to Nanaimo RCMP.

The GMC Jimmy ended up veering into a ditch following the collision while the Dodge Dakota sustained heavy damage, police said.

The 19-year-old man was taken to Nanaimo hospital with minor injuries. A 19-year-old woman had to be extricated from the Jimmy and was later airlifted to a Victoria area hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Her three-week-old son was also in the vehicle and was not injured, but was taken to hospital for precautionary measures.

The driver of the Dodge Dakota pickup was a 33-year-old man, who police said, was not injured.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene and the GMC Jimmy will undergo a mechanical inspection.

The investigation is continuing.
