The Victoria Pickleball Centre held its grand opening on April 26.

Greater Victoria’s first dedicated indoor pickleball court is holding its grand opening this weekend.

Over the weekend the newly opened centre was open for one hour of free open play or two hours free reservable court from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Those hoping to attend are asked to bring court-appropriate shoes and friends to swing a paddle.

The new 15,000-square-foot facility will help keep noise down for neighbours, organizers say.

Brittany Buna with the Victoria Pickleball Centre says the centre has been fully booked for the first weekend.

“It’s nice to hear some pickleball noises. So we’re just really fortunate for all the support from the community,” she said.

Buna says the facility is the first dedicated indoor facility for Greater Victoria.

“There’s no other competing sports, so it’s 100 per cent pickleball,” she said. “People are so excited to see proper courts, proper nets that are permanent, that are staying there and that they have fencing around it, they’re not chasing balls around courts, and people are really, really loving it.”

The facility is open for general play, but it will also be offering lessons starting on May 1 for those hoping to join the sport, or improve their skills.

The pickleball court is located at 136-2950 West Shore Parkway and after this weekend will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
