The province said Wednesday morning southbound traffic entering the McKenzie intersection will be shifted to new temporary Admirals Road on- and off-ramps.

Starting tonight, southbound commuters will see a change on their route when they hit the McKenzie interchange in Saanich.

The transportation ministry says southbound traffic entering the intersection will be shifted to new temporary Admirals Road on-and-off ramps.

Officials say the project has reached its next milestone, as the ramps will allow crews to lower Highway 1 and build the eventual overpass across the highway that connects McKenzie Avenue and Admirals Road.

The government expects to see initial delays as drivers adjust to the new lanes and signal locations and staff will be on site during commute hours to monitor traffic flow and signal timing.

The project is designed to improve the “Colwood Crawl” and ease congestion on South Island traffic.

Construction began on the $85 million McKenzie interchange project on Sep. 29, 2016 and is expected to open to traffic next summer.

The ministry asks drivers to follow signs, watch for workers and obey the 60 km/h construction speed limit.
