The Island Highway in Lantzville will once again shut down in both directions as work to repair a sinkhole in the middle of the road continues Friday.

The highway is closed at Superior Road and drivers are being told to expect two-hour delays.

A detour is in effect via Superior Road and Lantzville Road, Mainroad Contracting said in a news release.

“Please slow down, obey signs and traffic control and watch for roadside workers,” the company said.

DriveBC will continue to provide updates on the status of the highway, which was open to single-lane southbound traffic most of Friday morning.

The sinkhole opened up under the centre median on the route, shutting down traffic a day earlier.

The sinkhole appeared about 100 metres north of Superior Road on Highway 19 Thursday afternoon.

“Basically, the road underneath the concrete [median] has dipped. Mainroad were aware of it. Obviously now, the state has got worse and it’s got to be fixed,” said Lantzville Deputy Fire Chief John Marment.

Marment asked drivers in the area to stay at home if they don’t have to travel while repairs are underway.
