A Sooke man shot in his own driveway in what investigators are calling a targeted incident has been identified in an online fundraiser.

Tony Nelson was shot at his home in Otter Point just after 7:30 p.m. Saturday and was rushed to hospital in serious condition.

RCMP said a 55-year-old Sooke man was arrested a short while later after he fled the scene and hid in a nearby neighbourhood.

Early indications are that the suspect and victim were known to each other, according to police, and investigators are looking into the possibility that the suspect turned up at Nelson’s home with the intention of shooting him.

A GoFundMe campaign is raising money for Nelson’s family as he recovers from a serious gunshot wound.

“He is one of the kindest, most generous, humble men you will ever meet. His family is his world!” wrote family friend Natalia Kaisinger. “Through absolutely no fault of his own his life will now forever be changed. We are hoping to raise money to allow him to recover without the worry of where his next paycheck is coming from.”

The fundraiser notes Nelson and his wife also have a teen son “who will also be forever affected by this tragic event.” It had raised more than $6,000 of a $10,000 goal as of Monday morning.
