Sonic the Hedgehog, filmed on Vancouver Island, opening in theatres this week

There’s a lot of anticipation in Ladysmith and the rest of Vancouver Island for the opening of a Hollywood blockbuster that was largely filmed here.

“Sonic the Hedgehog” is based on a video game and it opens in theatres Thursday.

But those involved are getting a sneak peek screening in Nanaimo Wednesday night and they’re hoping it’s a hit.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a Hollywood Blockbuster with a $95 million budget.

In September of 2018, $11 million of that was spent filming on Vancouver Island at locations between Courtenay and Ladysmith.

Ladysmith’s Deputy Mayor is among those excited to see her town on the big screen.

“We’re just delighted and very excited,” said Tricia McKay.

“Tonight actually is a private viewing they’re offering for anyone who was involved in the movie and it’s a full house so we can’t wait.”

The adventure-comedy is adapted from a 1991 Sega Video game.

Sonic, the world’s speediest hedgehog embraces his new home on Earth. He and his new best friend Tom, played by James Marsden, team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik played by Jim Carrey.

One shop owner in Ladysmith who shut down for a day of filming as 1st avenue was transformed into small-town, USA says he’s already got tickets and it was a cool experience having the film crews working just outside his front door.

“It was pretty hard to see what was going on. I did watch the explosions on the street though. It was probably one o’clock at night that they did that,” said Andrew Akroyd of Purple Pigeon Treasures.

And those in Ladysmith say it was a great experience hosting the production.

“It brought us a little bit of knowledge about Hollywood for one thing and how to do these things,” said McKay.

“It was very very interesting to watch but it puts us on the map a little bit. We’re hoping we’ll get the recognition this little town deserves.”

Those in Ladysmith hope Sonic the Hedgehog will do well at the box office and will result in more films being shot in the region.
