Oceanside RCMP is on the lookout for a large section of a metal guard rail that was stolen off a highway overpass earlier this week, and add that another section was being prepared to be stolen as well.

Mounties say the theft occurred sometime between the afternoon of May 14 and May 15 along the Cochrane Road overpass, which crosses above Highway 19 in Qualicum Beach.

Approximately 40 feet (12 metres) of metal guard rail was removed from the west side of the overpass, while another 40 feet of guard rail was being prepared to be removed.

Mounties say this second section of guard rail was unbolted, and was resting on stanchions along the side of the overpass.

“The potential for a fatal crash was extremely high had the unbolted guard rail fallen from the overpass and landed on the highway or a moving vehicle below,” said Sgt. Shane Worth of the Oceanside RCMP.

“Fortunately, police were quickly alerted to the incident and repairs were made right away by highway crews,” he said.
